How Do Reiki Attunements Work?

A Reiki Master passes "attunements" to the student via a special ceremony. Though methods vary slightly between traditional attunement ceremonies, they all include a common set of elements:

• Channeling the Reiki Symbols
• Placing the Reiki Symbols into the aura
• Using the magic of "intention" to set the attunement

Below is a YouTube video of a 3rd Degree Reiki Attunement illustrating the basic components. It's especially useful, because it shows each of the symbols used. The Reiki Master draws the symbols in the air to channel each specific variation on the universal reiki energy. He then transfers the energy associated with each symbol into the student's aura by drawing the symbol with his mind's eye into the crown chakra at the same time as he pronounces the name of the symbol out loud.



 

To me, an American who speaks Japanese, it's amusing to hear someone pronouncing the symbols with a thick British accent! Since the sound vibration is used to channel the energy, is it possible that pronouncing the symbols with a thick accent would channel a slightly different variation of the energy?

I think it's possible that there is a slight difference -- a "coloration" -- to the energy. When I watch the video, I definitely perceive a slight difference! But it's still the same good ole Universal Reiki Energy. The slight difference is a bit like meeting a friend who is wearing a different outfit -- same person, but there is "something different" today... and every day!

Reiki is an ancient form of hands-on energy-based healing that can be traced back centuries.

While it's difficult to trace the exact history, some believe Reiki began in Tibet several thousand years ago, before re-emerging in Japan in the late 1800's.

In all variations, the process for getting started was similar: Through a series of initiations called attunements, a Reiki Master employs the Self-Attunement Ceremony with ancient sounds and symbols that attune an individual's nervous system to a higher level of energy. A level is reached in which the students — not necessarily highly-trained nor spiritually gifted — can experience more energy flowing through their hands, giving them the power to heal themselves and others. By employing different symbols, varied types of healings, including remote healings, can be performed.

Modern day Reiki Attunement has largely employed the Master-to-Student form of attunement, both in "traditional" forms (Usui) and non-traditional variations.
